Onward (2020) Review

Trailer to Onward: https://youtu.be/gn5QmllRCn4

Onward, directed by Dan Scanlon is an animated story about two brothers, Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley (Chris Pratt) Lightfoot set off on an epic journey to find their dads upper half in a post fantasy world that still has some magic left in it.

Onward never really caught my attention when seeing it in the previews but with all the other big movies moving their release date back due to the virus I figured I would give this a shot.

I didn’t know what to expect from this movie. All I knew is that it was an animated fairy tale type movie with Chris Pratt and Tom Holland in it so I figured it had to be decent.

For most of the movie I would say it was kind of hard to stay invested with the journey they were going on. The premise was the two Lightfoot brothers wanted to find their dads second half of his body so they can see him one last time but we never really see the dad interacting with these characters at all in the first place. No flashbacks or anything. I feel like the journey would’ve been more impactful if we got to see what their relationship with their dad really was like which would make us as an audience want them to see their dad just as much as they do.

As any other Pixar movie, Onward has it’s funny adult humor bits for adults and funny fart joke type bits for kids.

I did like the relationship between the two brothers because it was relatable to me and my brothers. I also like how this movie wasn’t completely predictable. This was a through on through brother movie and I really liked that. Did it leave an impact on me? Eh I don’t think so. Did it have it’s moments? Yes! Onward is no Toy Story 3 or Kung Fu Panda but it’s definitely not Cars 2 either. Overall I’d say it wasn’t keeping my attention at first but wrapped up very nicely and for that I am going to give Onward…
